I'm a Republican in the Houston, TX area. Whenever a bill comes up for a vote I support or oppose it's pretty easy to contact my senators -- Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchenson -- because they are both Republicans. I know that they share many of the same political values that I do and I can point to the party platform on how I want them to vote. However, my congressman is the Hon. Nick Lampson, a Democrat. How can I ask him as my representative to vote for or against a bill in a way that would be meaningful to him even if it would be contrary to his party's platform and political values?

You could simply point out why you think the bill would or would not be beneficial to you and other constituents in his district. Just write a persuasive letter. You don't have to mention that you're a Republican, you are simply a voter in his district and that is all that matters. You will probably get a form letter in response, but it will list the reasons why the congressman voted as he did.

When writing to an opposition congressman don't expect an accurate answer. If you send an email they will return with their website and a form letter to check them out.

If you write to one in another district or state the form letter will tell you they don't respond to non-constituent mail or email. and worded very abrupt and almost hostile that you are taking up their staff's valuable time with any question.

Because he is YOUR representative, you can ask anything of him.Writing to those with whom you agree , changes very little. If he receives 200,000 letters, emails, telephone calls, for something, and only 120 against-chances are you've got his attention, regardless how he feels. He represents you-not the other way around. You pay his salary, his office expenses, his pension costs and God knows what else.Make him work for you!He is your employee.
