get a copy of your free credit report. Than call each creditor or bill collector yourself and tell them your having financial hardship and that you would like to settle the account.
The will quote you a lesser amount to pay and close out. Make sure you get all your deals in writing before you pay them. Also they may say if you want it deleted from your credit report than you will have to pay in full...get that in writing and than pay. Negotiate to where you can get it off your credit and make settlement not payment in full. If they ask you to make an offer first...start at 30%.
If you dont owe the debt...call the credit reporting bureau and dispute it. Than send a letter to the bill collector requesting validation.
If you do owe the debt dont bother disputing or asking for validation like some people tell you to...its a waste of your time cause the bill collector will than validate it and get pissed off cause they think your trying to play them for a fool... so they will sue you and retain judgment than that stays on your credit report for 10 years.

i would say by doing it yourself. i did not have much to pay off but i was not making payments which ruined my credit score. with my tax refund i paid off three accounts i had. one was for a closed credit card in the amount of $200, a store credit card in the amt of $400 and a cell phone bill that was never paid which was about $200. what i did was i called the companies and asked if they could knock off a few late payments because i was ganna make a payment in full, in one shot and they all did. after the accounts were paid i disputed the items so that the credit bureaus could update my info and indicate that all account were paid in full. my score raised from 513 to 632 in less then a month. i suggest that you negotiate the amount to pay if a collection agency is handling the account so that you could pay less because we all know that the amount they request is actually the amount with all the late fees and non payment fees added which can make a big difference on the original amount that u actually used. if you rcvd late payments most companies would knock off 1-2 especially if you are paying the debt in full and have never requested to have a late payment removed.

Depending on whats on there and the actual severity of your credit problems,. If it is just mild then the best thing to do is consolidate through a 0% card or through a sig loan from your bank, start paying down the active debts, and if you have anything in collections settle for 50% or less of what they claim you owe, its easy to settle and can save you tons

Negative items stay on your report for seven years. Just don't get in to any more trouble, let the seven years go by, then you will have a great report again. I know this for a fact, because I had to go thru it due to a bad marriage 15 years ago.
