An autoimmune response would occur. The body would not recognize the A or B antigens that the person does not make themself and an immune response would occur with the body making antibodies that would destroy the new blood cells.

This could result in a life-threatening reaction. Yes, people do die from being given the wrong type blood. That is why it's so carefully matched. O-negative can be given in an emergency situation while your own blood is being typed and cross matched. Once your blood type is known, you will be given that type unless, for instance, there isn't any available.

O-negative is the universal donor. However, being given this type of blood could still possibly result in a reaction. People who are O-negative can ONLY receive O-negative.

If you know your blood type, you should carry a card in your wallet that states what type you are. You can find out by donating blood OR asking your physician to have you typed.

PLEASE PLEASE do NOT attempt to give blood if you know you are infected with something that could put another person at risk (HIV, HBV, etc).

An incompatible transfusion (giving A to B, AB to A, AB to B, B to A, A or B or AB to O) can result in the following consequences, according to the website listed below.

"The most common symptoms are chills, rigors, fever, dyspnea, light-headedness, urticaria, itching, and flank pain. If any of these symptoms (other than localized urticaria and itching) occur, the transfusion should be stopped immediately and the IV line kept open with normal saline. "
