You are probably not going to consider this a "good answer" because I am a Christian therefore have to answer it from that vantage point.
Initially, hope is the basis for faith...
However, once the faith is there, and the person begins to learn about God, the Holy Spirit enters the person and the faith turns to knowledge. I don't just believe in God and Jesus.......I know them.
Like I said, you probably won't like this answer but it is the best I can give you.

Because there are no "obvious signs" of there being "no God". On the contrary, there are "obvious signs" that a God DOES exist. Take a look at your own body, take a look at the universe and this planet. Everything is intelligently designed. Nothing came about by random chance. Take a look at how incredibly complex and sculpted your body is. Only an atheist would look at Michelangelo's statue of David and say, "Look what billions of years of wind created!" You would believe that this computer in front of you was "intelligently designed", but you believe that the human body, which is thousands of times more complex than a computer, came about by sheer accident? That's not even logical, and I thought you guys worshipped at the altar of "logic".
The Bible says that "the fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'." The word "fool" here in the Hebrew is translated as "insane". Someone who says there is no God is either insane or insincere.

Ignorance, superstition, refusal to join the modern era, loss of political and financial power.....these are just a FEW reasons why some people still beleive in Gods.
And, some of the signs arent all that noticable. Its just that it takes intelligence, curiousity and intellectual honesty to come to terms with much of the scientific evidence - which most people do not have the time, energy or desire to accomplish - its easier to remain ignorant and THINK youre right, then to actually crack open a book and find out that you have a hell of a lot to learn about the world around you.... "fivescore's" response is a perfect example - if she had any understanding of physics, she might realize that her statement is factually incorrect...

There may be no obvious signs, but there is such an abundance of subtle signs, we believe.
Romans 1:19
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

They believe and faith completely on the fact that God will hide himself to keep people from believing in him by default. As a "test." I believe, also that they see no proof either way-- against God or for him, except what is in their souls. And, looking at it, neither do I. I sympathize with them, but I can't go out on such a limb. I feel more at home with Buddhism than I ever did with Christianity.

May I offer a new perspective. You have asserted there is no God. That is an necessary assertion. The statement, "There is a God.", is the assertion. It is what needs supporting evidence.
Ask believers that question. I think will find the same dearth of good answers I have.

The Earth evolves & revolves caused by atoms & gravity. Where the heck you think that starts from? Duh. A higher power, God. Which came first, the chicken or the egg. Only God knows. That's how we believe in a higher power, because the universe started through power. God is just the name some give that power in order to acknowledge it better.

Christians, Jews and Muslims believe in God through what is called Faith. Faith needs no proof. If you think about it there are a lot of things people have faith in, but no proof. Do you have proof that:
you are going to wake up tomorrow?
the sun is going to rise tomorrow?
your partner or whoever will still love you tomorrow?, etc. etc. etc.
But you believe all these things and more will happen don't you? because you have faith.

I've seen many "straightforward" signs. However, to those dead set not to believe, not even a message written in heaven would suffice.
