The Roman Catholic Church, during the dark ages.
It was the stupidity of the RCC which made the dark ages, dark.
Like putting Galileo in jail.

I believe the best example would be treatment of Galileo and I am sure others. But if you rag on the Church this way you might say that they kept the Arts alive and I would rather have art than Science any day of the week.
P.S. DaVincci too was supported by the Catholic Church at various times in his early and latter career.

"Galileo's challenge of the Church's authority through his assault on the Aristotelian conception of the Universe eventually got him into deep trouble with the Inquisition. Late in his life he was forced to recant publicly his Copernican views and spent his last years essentially under house arrest. His story certainly constitutes one of the sadder examples of the conflict between the scientific method and "science" based on unquestioned authority. Unfortunately, there still are many forces in modern society that would shackle the scientific method of open enquiry in idealogical chains of one kind or another."

The Church of England opposed education of the masses. Papal authority opposed almost everything and everyone. As freethinking advances , superstition shrinks. It will take time, but one day Christianity will be spoken of as extinct, alongside, Aztec, Roman, and other ephemeral belief systems. Science alone can prepare our future.

The Roman Catholic Church refused to listen to Galileo's hypothesis that the earth revolved around the sun.
They sanctioned him from teaching.

Probably the most egregious example was the Catholic church censuring Galileo because he had the nerve to say that the earth orbited the sun.

Catholic church - Galileo! They didn't officially declare that he was right and they were wrong until sometime in the 20th century.
