contrary to some answers, i've never heard 'white' people say 'ax' unless they were trying to be 'black'. and it is not a prejudice question when i've only heard black people say it.

First of all, it is not only Black people. I've heard White people say 'aks' also.
Second of all, not ALL Black people pronounce 'ask' like 'ax'.

Not everyone speaks the same and not everyone has the same accent or dialect.

It isn't merely black people who say it as ax, although I'm not challenging your assertion that you've not heard white people say it unless they're imitating blacks, I have heard white people say aks and not when they're imitating black people.

This is a natural (though uncommon) form of language change called metathesis which is the reversal of order of two sounds in a word. Usually this isn't a uniform change that occurs in certain sound across all words of a language (though this isn't unheard of), but more often occurs only in a few words of a language. Another example of this is the English word "bird" which used to be pronounced "brid".

i find it hard to say ask with the s sound, especially if i say asked, it comes out axed. Its just another thing that makes humans unique from each other :D

that sure is a prejudice question. even if that's how you feel, you did not have to put "black" in there. you could have said "why do some people"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! not ALL black people speak in that way.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!
That's like saying "Why do all white people live in a trailer??"
That remark is totally retarded!!!
What do you base your ques on? 10-50 black people? ?
I am a black woman who does not pronounce ask like how you say "black people" do.
L.B "They speak english but in a different way" Yes "they" do................... LOL!!
Are we STILL living in a narrow minded world in the 21st century?????????????
We have to come together in order to move on & with ignorance like this it makes it hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lets concentrate on people traits, personality, character instead of trivial rubbish like that!

the lower your education is, the more words you tend to mispronounce. white people say 'ax' instead of 'ask' too. it is not color specific.
