What would you do if your dog killed three cats and brought them to you? And after that, right before Thanksgiving she killed and brought me the BIGGEST male pheasant I've ever seen. Guess what we had for Thanksgiving dinner?

Cats have rodents as their natural prey, but will diversify to birds, or fish (from ponds) if the opportunity presents itself. A cat is still very much a wild animal, and to punish it would risk the animal getting confused. To fuss over it would draw attention. So a silent clean up. Don't use bleach, cats love the smell and could think, dead bird + feathers + blood = bleach = great and go for more. So no fuss, just clean up and hope the birds catch on. They usually do. Once caught, a bird stands little chance, the shock usually kills the bird, even if you can't see any wounds. A cat can kill a bird without touching it.
Although if you have cats and parrots, you should watch the cat, in my experience, the parrot is totally safe :)
Rodents however, will play dead in an attempt to escape.
This behaviour isn't feral, feral cats are simply not adjusted to humans and living in a house with them. Bird killers can also be that purring ball of fur on your lap.

There's a few things you can do to prevent this happening in the future -
* put a bell on it's collar (or 2 or 3...)
* make sure the cat doesn't go outside at night, cats are more likely to hunt when they have this slight advantage over other types of wildlife around. (This is a big one in Australia)
* use a cage outside (these are custom built and allow them to run outside but restricts them from getting outside your property or catching wildlife)
* keep the cat inside 24-7
It's feline nature that it's going to chase birds, bugs, and small mammals and reptile so just take precautions so it can't be quite so successful in the future.

Cats are natural hunters. It's not unusual for a cat to kill a bird (well, they try to anyway). Just because your cat has killed a bird does not mean that you should not keep it. As for the blood and feathers everywhere, just clean it up. Also, if your cat brought the bird to you, it means that it loves you!!

Is your cat desex? It helps to know that because they're so active and need constant attention. It would help to know if its a male or female and being cats its natural for them to do that. Unfortunately the bird was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Cats are curious creatures and get bored when got nothing to do.
With being ferral maybe its best to get a companion for the cat. I know this because I had a cat and had to get it desex then it moan for a long time since then it had a companion and they play all day and don't take any notice for birds. Make sure puss get well fed.

There is not a lot you can do to stop them but you can put extra bells on their collar in an attempt to alert birds to their presence, as well as putting them inside at night and/or when you are not home, although this is not always possible if they don't always come when called. It is a natural instinct of theirs and they do not know better. Another deterent is to make your yard uninviting for birds such as putting netting over plants.

keep a better eye on it or keep it indoors
but man is the reason for the loss of birds too you know
they have destroyed all their homes & people also dumped the poor cats in the bush when they didn't want them so you cant blame the feral cats they had to live blame man & dont take it out on the poor cats

Remember, cats are from the same family as lions, they have the instinct to hunt in them. However, many birds divebomb cats and try to annoy them, so if sure they can't really help it. If you see your cat going in for the kill, i'd stop them though.
