Here is my question. I will be doing the very tourist stuff on Sat and Sun of my stay but I want to experience the Fashion and History of New York when I'm by myself on my Mon-Tues day stay. Is there a map you can buy or find that has certain shopping centers (soho, big chain store, china town) already listed on the map and the directions on how to get there. Also I'm staying in Newark, New Jersey (for free) what subway do I take in?

From Newark Penn Station you can either take the PATH to lower Manhattan or NJ Transit to Penn Station.

Yes, the PATH is definitely going to be you're way into the city and you can either take taxi's (more expensive but you'll get to see the sights) or the subway to travel around. As for the fashion & history of NY not sure if there are maps but (for fashion) you can't really go wrong by walking around Soho and the Village (downtown) where you can also check out brownstones, Washington Sq. Pk, NYU etc... , 5th Ave betw. 34th and 57th (midtown) where you can also see St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Radio City, Empire State and Madison betw. 60th & 81st (upper east) where many high end stores are located and a multitude of museums and central park are one block away (on 5th Ave)...

EOD you may want to check a few addresses and "build" your own map using http://www.hopstop.com...

Have fun!

Call the F.I.T., the Fashion Institute of Technoloy, on Seventh Avenue at 27th Street, or 28th Street. And you could try Parsons School of Design. Those are the two main fashion schools in NYC. For fashion stores, you just need to walk along the upper East Side on Lexington Avenue from 60th to 86th Street and you will see plenty of fashion stores.
