1.The first commandment means, don't worship any false gods, and also don't let any worldly things or people come between you and God.
2. The second commandment means, do not make any graven images or bow down to them. The Catholic Church is in violation of this commandment, which is why they removed it from their catechism. I think there are some small groups of Christians who include photographs in this law, but I would see those more as "frozen memories" rather than statues.
3. The third commandment is about not taking the Lord's name in vain, or swearing. Christians are to refrain from misuse of His Holy Name and from all vulgarity.
4. The fourth commandment is about "remembering the Sabbath". I should make a comment here that Sunday is NOT the Biblical Sabbath! It is the pagan day of worship - "the venerable Day of the Sun". Nowhere in the Bible will you find any authorization for Sunday worship. That is the false Sabbath instituted by the Catholic Church and passed down to the Protestants. Everyone in the Bible from Adam to John the Revelator and everyone in between, including Christ Himself, worshipped on the 7th-day Sabbath. This also includes all the apostles and the gentiles up until about 345 AD when the Catholic Church took over and started persecuting sabbathkeepers. The Sabbath (Saturday) was instituted at Creation as a memorial of Creation, meant to be kept by all Mankind, not just Jews. If we had "remembered the Sabbath", there never would have been a "theory of evolution", because God's Sabbath would be constantly a reminder of His Creation every single week.
5. The fifth commandment is about honoring your parents. They gave you life; treat them well.
6. The sixth commandment is about not killing (people, not animals). This includes things like abortion, euthanasia, and suicide.
7. The seventh commandment is about not committing adultery. This includes all forms of sex outside of a heterosexual marriage, like fornication, extramarital sex, homosexuality, pedophilia, bestiality, prostitution, and pornography.
8. The eighth commandment is about not stealing. No explanation needed. You know what stealing is.
9. The ninth commandment is about not lusting after your neighbor's wife.
10. The tenth commandment is about not coveting things that your neighbor owns, like his house, his car, his job, his wealth, etc. Be content with what you have.
If everyone on Earth obeyed all 10 of these, the evils of the world would virtually disappear. God's Law is not there to encumber us, but to make us free and happy.

The 10 commandments are God's Holy Law. These will be the standards that he will judge all people by when they stand before Him.
God's Holy Law brings the knowledge of sin and he gave every human a conscience (con means with, and science means knowledge) and we automatically know when we have lied, stolen, cheated, lusted, etc.
You must repent (turn away) from yours sins and put your faith in Jesus, if you do this then God will give you his Grace, which is a gift you did not deserve, and He will forgive you of your sins.
Check out the 'Way of the Master.com' website and you can find a very information explanation of what you are asking about.

I'll do you one better. The 10 Commandments were implemented as societal and religious law to control the barbaric people of 2000 years ago. Obviously governmental law wasn't working. People thought it was optional. So the leaders said - , "Well, let's threaten their very existence with eternal torment and damnation...." Hence "God's" laws came about.
You can't have any other God before the one you're worshiping or the laws dissolve and society descends into chaos. You don't want other men wanting other men's wives because that could lead to murder. You really don't want people killing eachother, lying, stealing, and cheating because that causes fights and chaos.

Read them. They're pretty self-explanatory, and they were designed to be understood by even the most simple, uneducated person.
