I am going to assume that you want a legitimate answer so here goes.
There are several types of both batteries. Rechargeable include Ni-Cad (Nickel Cadmium), Lion (Lithium ion), NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride}, and Lead Acid to name a few currently on the market. All of them need a charger either built in to the appliance they are installed in or be removed and charged in a special charger that comes with them.
The chemicals in these batteries eventually get used up or chemically changed so that they will no longer hold a charge.
Different chemical compositions will yield different numbers of cycles (that's discharge/recharge cycles). Some types of these batteries, such as Ni-Cad are notorious for gaining a charge "memory". That is, if they are not completely discharged before recharging, the amount of time between cycles will be shorter and shorter more quickly.
Now as for disposables; the are made of different chemicals that are not safe to try to recharge. They tend to go BOOM when heated. It really isn't true that they can't be recharged, it just isn't safe to do so. Another thing disposables will do is LEAK. The chemicals in them are either acid or alkaline type stuff. They will corrode the inner workings of whatever you left them in. So please do not try to recharge them or reuse them for these reasons. And also remove them from whatever toy you use them in, as I said they can leak over time.

The main difference is that a non-rechargeable battery is just that - non-rechargeable. Once the battery is dead, it's garbage. A rechargeable battery can be recharged hundreds of times before it is dead and unusable.

Which to use depends on what you need to use the batterey for. Non-rechargeable batteries such as standard alkaline are better for low-draw devices like TV remotes where as rechargeable batteries (Nickel-metal-hydridem, NiMH and Lithium-ion being the best today) are best used for high-drain devices such as digital cameras, laptops, portable media players, and cell phones.

Rechargeable batteries are also usually better for the enviornment compared to non-rechargeable batteries.

Rechargable batteries are used primarily for the use of vibrating toys. When using non rechargable, you can expect the life expectancy to be around 1 day.

The difference is in chemical composition and the chemical reaction used to produce voltage.

In a non-rechargeable battery the chemical reaction is one way. Once the chemicals are used up the battery is "dead" and has to be discarded.

In a rechageable battery the chemical reaction can be reversed by introducing a charge current to the battery.

non rechargable batteries are useless when they "run out" or no longer work...so you throw those away and replace them with new ones.

rechargable batteries are still useful after they "run out." all you have to do is charge them on an appliance made for that (you'd have to purchase this for the rechargable batteries) so these are resusable, but after some time you'd have to throw those away too.

and that is the difference

A rechargeable battery can be recharged!

rechargeable batteries are made form NiMH, and non-rechargeable batteries are alkaline based.

One can be recharged - rechargeable
One can't - non-rechargeable.

You were kidding, right????

you can re-charge a re-chargable one, a non-rechargeable one is done once the battery is dead.
