The winds died down and gunpowder was used to clear areas so that the fire could not jump to a new area.

Ironically, this technique was used in the great Chicago Fire. However, instead of creating an area where fire could not spread, it created piles of flammable rubble that helped the fire to spread more easily.

Fire fighters resorted to blowing up buildings with gunpowder in order to deny the fire its fuel. This, plus the subsiding of the winds, reduced the fire so that it could be extinguished (with water)-.
