Kartoffeln. Also called Erdäpfel. This means earth apple, which is translated from the French pomme de terre: pomme (apple) and terre(earth).
This is probably a corruption - it is maintained by some that the French originally called the potato pomme de tir which means an apple which you pull (presumably out of the ground)
