why not take it for a test drive like the 2nd poster said, I find it hard to believe that they break down more then a Chevy. Just go to the Hyundai website and you will find plenty of info on the car and its quality. You'll see that Hyundai is rated higher then some of the Japanese cars they imitate, the Japs build the best so why not imitate them if you can do it well?

I had my elantra for about a year now. With proper maintenance and good driving habits (not flooring it at every stop sign/red light) the car will last you for quite a few years. No problems and Hyundai backs up their warranty all the way. I took it in for a tire rotation and they found that my trunk was out of alignment...they fixed it free of charge. Test drive it and get the feel of the car. It's a comfortable ride while driving fairly short distances...and it's great on gas.
If your looking to modify the car later down the road...i wouldn't suggest this car...it's kind of expensive to tune-up and takes alot of converting. As an Elantra driver, out of ten, I'd give it a 7.8

Jess: I purchased a 2000 Hyundai elantra station wagon . brand new from the dealer and we still drive it everyday, it has a little over 200,000 miles on it but they are mostly highway miles but regardless , if you give any vehicle a proper maintenance , they will last for ever , the only thing we have had replace is the alternator and the A/C compressor , brake pads and tune up, other than tires and regular oil changes , every 3000 miles any vehicle can last
for a lifetime . even a Mercedes Benz or Lamborghini will fail if you don't properly maintain it . good luck
email me and I can send you some pictures of it if you want .
