As a flight attendant for several years, the best way to stop your ears from hurting is to pinch your nose and blow several times from the top of descent until you are on the ground,If you have a cold,or feel slightly blocked up take sudafed,You should have no problems on take off or during the flight, its the coming down that hurts the most.

Try sucking on a boiled sweet and swallowing often and yawning, this action in most people helps to rebalanced the air pressure inside of your ears to that of the cabin. If like myself, this doesn't work go to the chemist in the airport before you fly and buy some Earplanes ( if that is what they are called now, it's been a few years since I last flown). These are ear plugs that are specially designed to ease the pressure and make your flight more comfortable.

If swallowing, sucking, chewing gum, yawning et al don't work, try earplugs. And not the cheapie ones from the drugstore either.
I found out by accident that some custom made silicone earplugs that I use for motorcycling not only filtered out noise so that I could sleep on a redeye, but also equalized the air pressure in my head so that I no longer have this problem.
I purchased mine at a bike show. But, I'm guessing that you could find a local vendor via a websearch.

24 hrs before flying, pinch your nose about once every few hours and "pop" them. On the mornng of the flight do the same, also while onboard before take off. As the aircraft climbs keep doing it. You will know when as your hearing changes, "Pop" them again.
Works for me as a frequent flyer.

Chew gum or try sallowing hard. You need to equalize the air pressure in your inner ear to the outside pressure.
Good luck and enjoy the trip.

Ask your wife to sit in another seat further away from you so you can't hear her going on at you all the flight!

Favorite method is to chew gum or bubble gum. The motion makes it easy to adjust air pressure.

buy a big bag of jolly ranchers or lifesavers( not the gummy kind) just suck on them, also bring some blottles of water, anything that can make you swallow, because when you swallow it will relieve the pressure that builds up in your ear
