Walking is a great form of exercise for nearly anyone. It doesn't require any special equipment, most people can do it regardless of their current weight, and you can do it anywhere.
But with this convenience comes a catch ... if you want to keep losing weight, you probably won't be able to keep following the same routine every day.
Since our bodies tend to adapt fairly quickly to any form of exercise we do regularly, routine workouts can actually keep us from losing weight...
So, if you see your weight loss stall -- or you don't feel very tired anymore when you're done -- you need to add some variety to your walking routine. Try one of these tricks:
Walk Longer
If you usually walk for 20-30 minutes, bump up to a 40 minute duration. Don't have the time? Walk for four 10-minute-long sessions through the day's courseDon't worry -- you'll still burn the same number of calories.
If you're walking often, but not losing weight, you may not be walking a long enough duration. If you walk briskly, adding 15 minutes to your usual duration could actually extend your walk by a whole mile.
To find your stride, a good rule of thumb is that as you walk, you should be able to easily carry on a conversation.
This doesn't necessarily apply if you're an advanced walker, but beginners should never be so breathless that talking to someone walking next to them becomes a challenge.
As you get ready to kick your routine up a notch, make sure you walk a little faster rather than taking longer strides -- this puts less stress on your joints, which may already be strained, particularly if you are significantly overweight.
Walking is not an expensive exercise, obviously (It's free!), but you will want to make a good investment in your sneakers before getting started. Make sure to get a proper fit with sufficient wiggle room in the toes. Always wear athletic socks. When the heels of your shoes begin to tilt or show signs of wear, it's time to pony up for a new pair.
Good posture while walking is important. Always keep your head up and eyes forward (Never watch the ground.). Stand up straight and keep your shoulders relaxed. You can pump your arms if you like, but if you're a true beginner, you may find using both your arms and your legs to be too much, too soon.
Make sure to have a back-up plan in case the weather gets bad such as mall walking or using a walking video like Leslie Sansone. Inclement weather should be no excuse for not exercising at all.
Pedometers are a great motivational tool, recommended by the likes of Dr. Kelly Brownell of Yale University's Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. Creator of the LEARN Program for Weight Management (http://www.shapeup.org/publications/hwhl/partax3h.htm), Brownell says pedometers are "highly rewarding" and that they serve as a "...constant reminder that any increase in your activity" is beneficial.
How long will it take to notice any differnce?
Calories and Weight
A pound of fat equals 3500 calories. To lose 1 pound a week you will need to expend 3500 more calories than you eat that week, whether through increased activity or decreased eating or both. Losing 1-2 pounds of fat a week is a sensible goal, and so you will want to use the combination of increased activity and eating less that will total 3500 calories for 7 days.

Walking is wonderful excercise! If you really want to lose weight though, there are other factors you need to focus on as well, like eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep. Walking will help you lose weight all over your body, but it will be a while before you begin to notice the effects. Keep walking (it's great for your heart!) but also try some other excercises for your upper body. Good Luck!

walking is the best exercise there is for the human body, it was designed to walk. however, if you are not watching your calorie intake, weight loss will be very slow. You will tone up before you lose weight by walking, so measurements are more accurate than the scale. Measure your waist and thighs and watch the numbers decrease the more you walk.
If 2 to 3 miles is your comfort level, that is great, but you need to be walking every day to get full benefit. So on those days when you don't have time to walk the full 2-3 miles, make an effort to at least walk a mile.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

True speed walking is very intensive and will give you the same calorie burn over time as moderate jogging. Alternate them since they use different muscle groups. The first response you received is correct. Your body can swing 8 pounds in two weeks easily in water weight, but to maintain that weight loss, you will have to create a 3500x8 deficit at some point to keep that weight off.

Walking should help you loose weight as long as you are walking at a good pace (elevated heart rate). Eventually, your weight loss will slow down and at that point you will need to add some weight barring exercises.

I think in order to lose weight the way you want to, you should walk a lot or slow - jog. You can run if you want to. Also if you are in no hurry, try joining a fitness club.

Eat a grapefruit as an alternative to drinking juice; the fiber will let you feel full longer, and grapefruit is which can help with weight loss.
