My husband has AS and has just been given the go ahead to get the drug Etanercept, which he will have to inject himself with a couple of times a week.
Previous to this he has had cortisone, which he refused to have after the first couple of times. Other than that he has been on several oral painkillers.

I have had ankylosing spondylitis for over 40 years. When I stopped doing strenuous activities and avoided getting in draughts when I was hot & sweaty, things then calmed down, and 'touch wood' I have not have any bad periods since then. In the early years I was given several different drugs but never injections. The only drug that did any good for me was an anti-inflammatory called 'indomethacin'. The best dose that worked for me was 25mg pills. When I occasionally feel a twinge, I take one. At its peak I was taking 6 spread throughout 24 hours, but you do get a bit dependent on them and reducing the dosage down to zero needs strong willpower. However, it might not suit everyone.

It really depends on the Patient. I am not keen to self-inject and they are watching my glucose level for diabetes, knowing I am not keen to 'self-inject'. I do not mind having injections, just could not stick one in myself. I have Psoriatic Arthritis which includes Ankylosing Spondylitis and I am not good at taking oral pain killers. I do take anti-inflammatory same one for the past 20 years and that helps, along with Valium 2mgs at night to relax the muscles and Lyrica to stop the neuropathic pain. Unfortunately I am a 'active' Arthritic, enjoy walking three miles through the fields three times a week, Pilates and Aqua Jogging, let alone DIY around my home and House Work, Gardening. Because I am so active my spine is not fusing and the Discs are bulging. Therefore I am now on these pain patches Fentanyl. They are helping me cope with the pain and allowing me to remain active. I always think the one question here is 'Quality' or 'Quantity' of life. For me Quality matters because if I had to stop doing all that I do, my life would not be worth living. I had to give up my hobbies: Tennis, Badminton, Hockey, things I really enjoyed and fine other activities to undertake. I am not willing to give them up, because then I will be left with nothing to do, as the Career went. So a personal decision was the pain patches and I am happy with them. You have to always keep in mind their is NO known cure. The Rheumatologist will usually discuss the treatments available and then the decision is yours.

I gave up on getting pregnant when I got divorced. I'm about to give up on the Tigers (again) because I don't think they will win the WS in the 30 years or so that I have left to live. I hung on to a marriage for 22 years because I had made a promise with my husband and with God to be married. Unfortunately I couldn't handle it anymore.
