The bad taste of things had in fact been noted at the time of Jesus as we have accounts from Rome who recorded things about the customs of people their empire administered. Jew
did indeed not employ toothpaste. They and other peoples used a dry twig to prod gunk from between teeth. Chewing on end of stem produced a small natural fibre brush good at
cleaning gum line. The dead sea salts then and today also
had folk medicine applications including dental care. Dead
Sea fishers who were not yet Fishers of Men would be one to
know both use and commercial prospects. Today we call this substance in our toothpaste a 'whitener'. Wine drinking
was popular then and it too had salubrious effects for teeth.

What you failed to realize is that they had some very keen means of keeping themselves clean.... They used things that you wouldn't imagine and they were pretty much lead into a lifestyle which kept them clean inside and out..... Believe it or not, they even had birth control...... The eye liner they used was made of ant paste and it wasn't just as a beauty tool, but to keep bugs out of their eyes..... they had some things going on... you just don't know!!!
Also, if you spent your life in a cave with 100 people for a year.... after a while, there is no smell because you would have acclimated...... if you listen to a loud pitched sound for so long, you don't hear it anymore.......
Just think.... 1000 years from now, someone may say how vile you are because you wiped your butt with toilet paper and not the 3 shells they now have.... what a sick and vile world those people lived in of the 21st century.... Brutes that actually tore down trees and killed animals to eat the meat of them!! who sprayed chemicals into the air and destroyed what was known as the ozone layer.....
So, which will be worse in the eyes of them in the future... your thoughts of Jesus' breath or the way you live your life now....??

Ginger

I was tempted, as the last poster to say "grow up" and then report you for violations. Instead I will actually answer your question.
Herbs and other naturally occuring substances were used for both medicine and cleanliness. A great deal of this knowledge came from the Jews (read the whole Old Testament) but some also came from the Pagans, particularly those who were healers.

That's probably why he stood on the top of the hill some distance away from his followers. There was quite a problem though if someone got too close and got a whiff of his breath or his moldy teeth. You lose faith pretty fast if you discover the son of god's breath smells like ***...

They had cinnamon, myrrh and spikenard back then. (I use cinnomon/myrrh toothpaste myself)! They were used for more than just to make perfume or spice up food. A chewstick, called a suwak may have been used back then as well. I don't think Jesus had stinky breath any more than the average person of today.

They didn't have the junk food that we have that causes bad breath either. Try just eating fruits and vegetables for awhile and see what your breath smells like. With only water to drink. Of course we still have alot of crap in those that they didn't have back then also.

Everybody stunk back then. Kinda hard to determine if you stink, when everybody around you stinks also.
