My rule of thumb is the site, smell, and squeeze method. First I look at the fruit to determine if there are brown spots or mold, wilt, etc. Then I smell the fruit. If it doesn't have a good, fresh, fruity smell, then its underripe. For melons, pears, peaches, nectarines etc., I gently squeeze the fruit to see if there is any give. If there isn't then its underripe. Unless its apples, then you want them firm to the touch. Sometimes I'll bring under ripe fruit home anyway and stick it in a paper bag for a couple of days to finish the ripening process.

I basically look for unblemished skins & even color. Also, the firmness can be important - watch out for bruising or soft spots. This applies to Apples, oranges, lemons, limes, necatarines, peaches, etc.
Strawberries are usually packaged in clear containers, so be sure to look at the berries - really any berries - from the bottom and sides..sometimes the bottom ones are already soft or starting to mold.
