did the vet tell you he needed to gain weight? I think that at 4 yrs old, he's probably at the size he's going to be (especially since it sounds like you're feeding him well).

If your dog is four years old, he's fully grown and doesn't need to gain any weight. Stop feeding him so much! Obese pets aren't healthy. If your dog is active and eating normally, he's fine. His metabolism is working properly.

If he starts LOSING weight, that is cause for concern. Take him to the vet. He could just have worms, especially if he's an outside dog, or he could have some sort of illness.

How much do you feed him? A cup of dog food has about 300 calories in it, so check with your vet to see what your dog's calorie requirements are. Also, if he doesn't look really underwieght, that may just be his body type. I have a 3 yr. old Doberman that no matter how much we feed her she won't gain weight either. Have the dog check for worms or other issues, and if there are no health issues, it's probably no big deal.

Have you seen a vet about the problem? If it is not medical, what do you feed your dog? A lot of big name/commercial dog food has very little nutritional value so you could try switching to a quality food.

www.mypetpantry.com is where we get ours. 3 dogs on it, doing great.

If you haven't seen a vet about the problem, that probably should be your first stop. Good luck.

is he really thin, maybe his weight is fine. Have you tried giving him dog vitamins, and maybe feeding him canned food? If he is very active he most likely won't gain weight.

he may just be an animal that doesn't gain weight.

I had a Chihuahua that was fine boned and very thin. He was very difficult to get him to put on weight.
