Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great, that the following prayer would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time it is said. The prayer was extended to include living sinners which would alleviate the indebtedness accrued to them during their lives.

Eternal Father,
I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the Universal Church,
those in my own home and within my family.
Amen.
Thats a lot of souls released - how many souls are in purgatory

Yeah but purgatory doesn't exist. Nothing in Christian doctrine mentions it, if I remember correctly.

1. The Catholic Church has not 'done away' with purgatory.

2. Limbo was never a dcotrine, hence nothing changed there.

3. Purgatory is biblical.

1 Corinthians 3:14–15: "If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire." You see, the Latinate word purgatory means a purgation or burning by fire. Paul in these verses refers to a purgation process whereby a man is saved even though his works are burned away. This is precisely what the Catholic Church teaches. A person at death who still has personal faults is prevented from entering into heaven because he is not completely purified. He must go through a period of purgation in order to be made clean, for nothing unclean will enter heaven (cf. Rev. 21:27).

2 Maccabees 12:40–45. When Judas prays and has sacrifices offered for soldiers who died in battle, he is commended for acting "very well and honorably."

Matthew 12:32 says that some people who sin "will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come." This suggests that there are some sins that will be forgiven in the age to come. If there is no purification after death, then this passage doesn’t make much sense.

1 Peter 3:19–20. These verses show Jesus preaching to "to the spirits in prison." The "prison" cannot be heaven, because the people there do not need to have the Gospel preached to them. It cannot be hell, because the souls in hell cannot repent. It must be something else. As you can see, there is nothing unbiblical about the claim that those who have died might not immediately go to heaven or to hell.

On the contrary, the idea of purgatory, when properly understood, is entirely consistent with the love of God. God wants us to be perfect (cf. Matt. 5:48). If we are not perfected by the time we die, we will be perfected in purgatory. He loves us too much to allow us to be less than what he created us to be. Purgatory is not about an angry God inflicting punishment upon his creatures. It is about a loving Father who "disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness" (Heb. 12:10).

As an agnostic, I am not a believer in Purgatory. However, those who responded above are ignorant of their own religious history. Just because there is no mention of Purgatory in their Bible does not mean that there is no mention of Purgatory in THE Bible.

The Canon of the Bible was set by the Concil of Rome in the fourth century. In the 1500s, Protestants decided that several books of the Bible were not the inspired word of God. Those books are still part of the Catholic Canon and include the justification for Purgatory.

This is a catholic doctrine .many such doctrines are not biblical based and no credence should be given to them.
purgatory never existed ,God said "Man has but a little while (to live)and then the judgment"so by creating the purgatory doctrine .they succeeded in 2 things. 1 A money making scheme whereby "you can buy your loved ones out of purgatory and into heaven.and 2. making God and Jesus out to be liars by contradicting their words. Jesus clearly stated that you had 2 choices his way or the Hell way. If you are saved ( by accepting the cleansing power of his blood) there is no fear of hell .because of his assurance of eternal salvation.those who don't make this choice will be judged by their works.and we all know how that's gonna go/ None are righteous no not one.
anyway i digress.
the only true doctrine is that set down in the holy bible KJV is most accurate.beware of those that have been added to or updated to fit the agendas of certain churches.
mans doctrines will send many to hell. as the enemy has planned.
more.--- for spirit roaming
1st cor 3:14-15 is speaking of those who have been granted eternal life through the act of acceptance and dependance of jesus.
mt.12:32 is refering to the blasphemy of the holy spirit (which by the way can come in the form of misrepresenting holy scripture)
and is never forgiven then ,now or ever!
1st peter4:19-20 is talking about hell and the angels that rebelled against God .check out this page

Purgatory wasn't mentioned AT ALL in the Bible, fellow scholar.

Purgatory is a place of suffering and repentance before worthy souls can enter heaven. This idea was a doctrine invented by the Roman Catholic Church in order to instill fear and devotion to its followers.

Sorry, but it doesn't exist...

amen. Let's keep praying for the holy souls in purgatory.

"For while you are going with your opponent to appear before the magistrate, on your way there make an effort to settle with him, so that he may not drag you before the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into PRISON. I say to you, you will NOT get OUT of there until you have PAID the very last cent." Luke 12:58-59

The Catholic Church has recently declared the purgatory a hoax.

Our Lord told St. Gertrude the Great ... WHAT?
What a piece of superstition that is.

You first have to believe in purgatory--It seems the Catholic Church has just canceled the theory of "limbo"--purgatory may be the next theory to bite the dust.
VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went.

Almost every soul goes to Purgatory...because we all die with unrepented sin. So there are billions of people there.
