Check your local shelter. If you cannot spend $300 to get a dog would you be able to spend that much or more properly vetting it? Maybe you need to wait a bit and save up some $$.

Why does it -need- to be a certain breed? Why not a mutt? Check out your local rescue associations and animal shelters. You are very unlikely to find a purebred dog from a reputable breeder for less than $300.

Try Petfinder. They will probably have what you are looking for. Small dogs in shelters tend to go very fast, but that's probably the only place you will find one for that sort of price.

Good luck and I'm so sorry for your recent losses.

I , recently, found myself in a similar circumstance. I lost 3 animals to tainted pet food.
My local vet was of great assistance. Your vet can be a source for info for relaible breeders and rescue groups.
Call them.

Many breed clubs have rescues adopting out their breed - google the breed of your choice.

A friend of mine has 2 german shepherd pups for sale. They aren't a small breed but they are very sweet girls. www.weberhausgsd.com
