Hello,
I am sure this is a very dumb question but I was just given a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee without the owners manual and need to know if I need to change the 4WD. The handle is in the all time 4WD position, but there are neutral and 4WD low positions, as well. Should the handle be in the neutral position since I do not need the 4WD at the moment? Thanks!

NO, you have the Quadra-Trac which is the full time 4WD model. The normal operating position is 4WD All Time. Placing the transfer case lever into the Neutral Position disconnects the transmission from the wheels for Towing which would make the vehicle stationary unless on a hill in which case the vehicle could roll if the parking brake is not set properly.

Also to place the vehicle into 4WD Low Range the vehicle must be rolling 2-3MPH with the transmission in neutral in order for the gears in the transfer case to mesh together, if you try this stopped it will kick out of low range when the transmission is placed back into gear.

the way your transfercase is set up you cant get out of 4wd or AWD (all wheel drive). also putting it in neutral is not a good idea because you wont go anywhere neutral is there so when you tow the jeep behind something the tires will spin freely and you wont need a trailer. perfect example are those motor homes with the wranglers behind them that wrangler is set in neutral which is why it can be pulled behind the motor home. finally 4 low is only used in conditions under 25mph any faster and you risk damaging the transfercase.

No. not all Jeep Cherokees came with 4WD. Although I can't imagine why anyone would want one, some were built as rear-wheel drive only.

if you put it in netural, the trans will not pull the car. Leave it in 4wd, unless you need alot of torque, then shift to 4 low
