My 3 year old is allergic to sunscreen, we have tryed many different brands and SPF formulations. She breaks out in a rash whenever we put it on her (its a bad rash too, resembles hives and lasts for a day or so). I cant not let her outside, so I need to find something that would help. Any suggestions?

I'm fair-skinned with two redhaired, fair children, so I know a little about the subject.

The safest sunscreens are those that contain only zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They are sunblocks because the substance physically blocks sunlight. Sunscreens need to bind to the skin, which is why the directions always tell you to apply them 20-30 minutes before you go outside. The new ones use very small particles so you don't look as white. There are many brands on the market, usually marketed as "chemical free".

If she still breaks out, she could be allergic to some other component of the product (especially fragrances, formaldehyde releasers, preservatives, and lanolin alcohol). A dermatologist can do a patch test to determine the specific chemical.

Sometimes a drug or cream will cause photosensitivity/photodermatitis. Certain antibiotics can do it, as can some fragrances and other chemicals.

Another possibility is that sunlight itself is causing her problem. When I was young I occasionally got hives from being out in the sun.

Certain medical conditions are characterized by sun sensitivity, such as some autoimmune conditions and cutaneous porphyria. These are uncommon and have other symptoms as well.

You may be able to find lightweight cotton clothing that covers her arms and legs. I used to sew things like that for my kids. There is also special clothing available for highly sensitive people:

long sleeved shirts, long pants, hats and sunglasses, put zinc oxide on her nose. The zinc oxide paste comes in colors now, so she probably will think it is cool.

This one is free of all the harsh chemicals. Just because it says Natural doesn't mean it is free of most of the ones that cause rashes.
