As the Protestants above me have answered, this was symbolic. (Catholics believe it's literal; this is the old "transsubstantiation vs. consubstantiation" debate.) Jesus was speaking of a believer's need to incorporate God into their very being. In this way, we become His children and grow more and more like Him each day.

no, it is the spiritual life giving source for Catholics. Jesus is being LITERAL, that is why many Jews didn't follow him afterwards when he made the following statements, because they didn't understand how they could actually eat and drink of Jesus' body and blood.

He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." John 6:54

"For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink" John 6:55

I went to a Catholic service once as a child. When they passed the bread and water and told us it was flesh and blood, I nearly puked because my child's mind made the association very clearly. I was seriously freaked out and it took me a long time to understand what all that was about.

Now I think it's funny.

Without spiritual understanding that only comes from God many things of God would seem foolish. There is a way that seems right to a man and this way ends in death. Many were offended with Christ many others knew him. The teachings of Christ did cause the Jews to misinterpret and bring about his crucifiction. The reason Muslims have no understanding of spiritual things and can not grasp the trinity is they seek only the understanding they can see with their physical eyes. It is the reason Christ said no man comes to the Father but through the Son. God is spirit and we worship him not with our flesh and traditions of man but by faith and spiritual understanding which only comes from God's revelation.
Can a dog grasp the spiritual things of God? Christ taught us not to cast our pearls before swine nor do we give to dogs that which is holy.

It only means that one should follow in the ways of Christ. It is simply symbolic and never meant to be literal. I never realized it was only a Catholic thing however as the protestant church I used to attend did the communion thing as well.

Being of Epona, and thus a Pagan, The Christians rituals do bother me. They knock my religion and rituals and yet to me
Their communion Ritual looks very pagan indeed and from the more distrubing canabalistic cultures of the south seas Islands, and some native american cultures. Scary aint it?
