If you've been using your XT for a while, you should have a good idea of what focal length works best for you. My guess is something like 50mm. If you want better image quality in that range, you coud pick up a Canon 50mm f/1.8. These are fairly inexpensive and you can use a larger aperture than with any zoom lens.
But a zoom lens - even the 18-55mm kit lens - should work nicely until you have specific reasons to upgrade.
Also pay attention to how other portrait photographers use lighting. This is at least as important as buyng a better lens.

I'm not a professional, as in my photography is charity or hobby only. However, let me recommend a few things based on my previous experience.

1. Lighting was always the biggest factor with any lens, With the proper lighting I could pull abstract and sensual telephoto/macro images of subjects with a Tamron 75-300mm 4-5.6 AF. But this required a work up with a tripod and lots of light work...

2. A macro lens should be in your arsenal, Canon makes a few decent ones as well as Sigma, at a reasonable price. These pieces make getting in close an emotionally pleasing experience. I have tried a EF-s60mm f/2.7 Macro USM and it was fun Ill be buying something similar to it soon.

3. Save money up and buy an image stabilizing lens. Apparently this fixes light problems, and makes newbies and pros better, This is from other peoples recommendations I do not own one yet... yet.

Heres a good website, It seems to be set up by people who are not receiving "funds" from sponsors, and has some really accurate and honest reviews of lens and cameras:

Hope this helps.

By the way I have an Xti and love it, however its really testing my limits to learn what I can and cannot do with the lenses.

Try with a 35-70mm Telephoto, f/1.8 would be the best, also you can make art with a fisheye lens.
