The odd characters are formatting characters (bold, line returns, font size, etc). Usually means that the file was either made with a different word processor, or with a later version of Word. If it is a different processor, then you may be able to install a converter for it. Check the Helps in Word for "file convertors"

get rid of word and use Open Office, it's free and will read Word files
