I have been depressed for a while now and with recent circumstances I have been severely depressed and I dont feel the need to eat at all. I have eaten anything but a slice of pizza an a small cookie in 4 days and I have lost about 18lbs now and I am getting scared of so much loss in weight and not having the urge to eat anything. I am going to the doc in about an hour and a half but I am just so afraid. I cant sleep, eat, hard drink any fluids, worried, feel sluggish, wake up during the night, rapid heart beat, irritable, withdrawing from friends and family. I cry and just cant get over this.

I dont know what the doc will do or prescribe me. I wouldnt wish this feeling on my worst enemy. I know meds are a not a fix. My gf is 5 months pregnant and she dumped me and I dont know if it is hormones. But I am worried to death because I want to be a family and feel like my hopes of a family are on the line here.

Reasons For Loss Of Appetite

Sounds like you have major depression. The chemicals in your brain get off balance which causes the loss of appetite, poor sleep and feeling of despair. I have had it too and it's awful. Ask the doctor if you have a chemical imbalance (usually causing major depression.) If so, the right medicine will make an enormous difference. You will get back your appetite, will sleep better, etc. Some of the medicines take a couple of weeks to start working so don't expect immediate results. However, I felt a little better very soon after starting to take an antidepressant--not wonderful but some of that awful hopeless feeling lifted. Don't be afraid of the medicine. Think about it--if the chemicals in your brain are out of balance, doesn't it seem logical that the best correction would be medicine.

Also, your doctor will probably recommend therapy. Studies have shown that people with major depression recover quicker with a combination of medicine and therapy. It is possible to recover--get back to feeling the way you probably once felt. I had to make recovery my top priority and the professionals I saw helped me get to the point to where I can say that I've recovered from that awful period in my life. Do whatever you have to do--even medicine. It's worth it. It is so wonderful to be happy once again.

Medication can help you get it under control so you can get your health back.

Some people eat and eat with depression, others lose their appetite altogether. Make a point of keeping a high calorie drink close by so you can get calories no matter how little you drink. Avoid caffine, since it will depress your appetite even more.

Since you are going to the doctor you will get help, but when this happened to me I would force myself to eat when other people were eating. It was the only way I kept my weight loss to a minimum.

What the other person said is not true... it's not major depression (yet). You need to be depressed for at least 2 weeks before it's major depression. Really, it's just you being really upset about your relationship, and odds are you will feel better within 2 weeks, meds or no meds, treatment or no treatment, although I can't guarantee it. That said, I think it's good you're going to see your doctor today and DO get a referral to a counselor and try whether you can see one today or tomorrow. I'm going to guess the doctor will give you a sleeping pill to get you to sleep, but I'm not sure what else the doctor will do.

Relax a bit about the weight loss, btw. You keep bringing it up in all your questions, but it's really not as bad as it seems, it's for a large part dehydration due to you not drinking enough. So basically, although you've lost 18 lbs in 4 days, you're not going to lose 18 lbs in the next 4 days... probably only a few lbs, assuming you're not going to start eating. Now, it *is* important that you start drinking something... I know that you said you almost threw up after 2 saltines and 3 sips of water, but almost throwing up is not the same as actually throwing up. At this point, it sounds like you shouldn't try to eat anything too fast, but put a drink next to you (not alcoholic and not caffeinated, and preferably not carbonated either... juice, milk or lemonade are best, but just water is good enough if you prefer) and force yourself to take as sip every minute. Just a little sip, not a gulp. This way you can drink 0.5-1 glass an hour and though you might feel nauseous, the odds of you actually throwing up are going to be really low if you drink that little that slowly. You're going to have rather bad headaches if you don't drink enough, so just, er, suck it up. ;) You can do the same thing with the saltines or some other food... 1/4 of a saltine every 3 minutes or something, for example. If you do happen to throw up, don't quit eating and drinking, but just slow it down even further, like a sip every 2 minutes instead of 1.

I know you're 24, so that my next suggestion might sound kinda lame to you, but I recommend going and buying a teddy bear or such. I've got a pluche puppy that's about 1.5-2 ft long and so does my husband. We bought them about 1.5 years ago. I'm 22, my husband is 30, and he cuddles with his pluche puppy almost every night, and when he's feeling sad he often cuddles with both of them. I usually only cuddle with the puppies when I'm sad. It's really helpful to hold something nice and soft that's there for you no matter what. Give it a try. If someone finds it and makes a lame-*** comment about it you could always just claim you already bought it for the baby. :)

Anyway... it's TEMPORARY. You won't feel like this for the rest of your life, trust me. Things will work out fine in some way or other.

That def could be the reason. I have an anxiety disorder and lately I have not been able to eat either because I get too nervous. Your brain is very powerful and can make you unable to do things...even making you physically sick or unable to eat. But if your feeling bad, you should get it checked out.
