I know the answer, but can't actually answer it in writing and am hoping someone can help me?

3 MEN GO INTO A MOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID
THE ROOM IS $30, SO EACH MAN PAID $10 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.

A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE
ROOM WAS ONLY $25, SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.

ON THE WAY, THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO
SPLIT $5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT
THE OTHER $2 FOR HIMSELF.

THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE
ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = $29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?

What if the bellboy gave them back the entire 5 dollars? Then would you say that each man paid $8.33 and the bellboy has zero for a total of $25.00? You're subtracting when you should be adding. The only equation that fits the above story is 30 = 25 + 3 + 2.

Big D has it right. Since the 5 dollars was subtracted from the original $30 it means that they paid a total of $25 and $25 divided by 3 is $8.33 and one third cents. Add the dollar back to this amount and they each pay $9.33 and one third cents for a total of $28. The bellboy's tip was $2 making a total of $30.

The room was for 25 $ right.....2 dollars were kept by the bellboy...3 dollars were given to each of them
so add them 25$+2$+3$=30$
you calculated the wrong way..

the 3 mean actually paid $28 for the room because the room was$25 and the bellboy gave each man a $1 back leaving $2 which the bellboy kept.

the dollar is missing because this riddle does not take into account the fraction of a dollar that each man would have gotten but the bellboy kept.....anyway you look at it...25 + the 3 dollars the men got and 2 dollars the bellboy kept = 30 dollars....

your math is off..

They already paid 10 each so that is 30 dollars.
The bellboy kept 2 dollars, that is 28 dollars.
Then gave each 1 dollar, that is 25.

OR...From 25 dollars... each got a dollar back---> 28 dollars plus 2 from the clerk.. that is 30 dollars.

Amazing what math can lead us to, huh?
