Imagine your earthly father said to you "You must love me or you will have sinned and incurred the horrible wages of sin". If an earthly father said this we would all agree that he was a psychologically twisted father, wouldn't we?
Of course most Fathers want their children to love them. But do they command it? And do they promise to severely punish their children if they don't love their Father?

i am gonna get a lot of thumbs down for this...but i don't care.
this is one of the reasons why in Islam we don't believe that Jesus is the son of God. God isn't this cruel He is just not! in Christianity or in Islam...He just isn't that heartless

Do you mean "Why is it the first of the Ten Commandments?" or "Why would we not be allowed into Heaven if we don't love God?"
I was a Christian because of Jesus, not God. God had too much blood on His hands in the Old Testement (OT) and seemed to cold hearted to damn people to hell in the NT.
Jesus knew our human sufferings better, so I followed Jesus as a guy with a powerful dad.
I have since seen past traditional dogma that painted God poorly and understand the loving father side of Him.
To answer both the questions I propesed, what if Heaven functioned on the basis of love?
In the womb, we were surrounded with a water sack ... it protected us and gave us life.
We died to that world and were born into this life where we are surrounded by air. It gives us life. The lungs we grew in the womb were useless there, but were prepared so we could get by in this world.
Now we are in this world, we grow our LOVE. We will not take our bodies to Heaven, but depending on our love, we can breathe easier and draw life elements easier.
Love comes from God.
So maybe that commandment is just to help prepare us for the next stage of life in the after-life

It's hard to explain that all on here, but god is love . and we should love him above anything! i mean he sent his son to die for us, so we may get forgiveness and go to heaven, I mean why wouldn't we want to love him? our earthly father is entirely different than our heavenly father i just can't get it into words on here to where you would understand, but try this verse in the bible John 3-16, and you know what, alot of people mock him and don't believe , but one day they to will need him and sadly it may be to late. have a good day !!

Being that mankind is of free will and little IQ, we have become very impressionable. If someone tells us sex is good, we will by nature want to try sex to see how good it really is. Same holds true here. If your father never told you to love him, then why would you? If you were orphaned, had no idea who or what a father was, would you love him the same? No. Also, religion is based on rewarding good behavior. If we live good lives, we are rewarded in heaven. Therefore if we follow his wording, we get rewarded in heaven. I guess.

The problem is that God is not like our earthly father. We cannot bring Him down to our level of understanding.
God loves every single one of us, whether we love Him or not.
We still have the choice to love and obey Him.

All of your answers are laughable, believing in a supernatural being for guidance. Your god demands this because the idiots who wrote that pathetic excuse of a book said so, there just stories. Humans created god, not the other way around, get it through your stubborn minds.

God does not command your love. It is the reason you have free will to worship God or believe a lie. Christ came to the world to save us from death which is a result of our sin. You are free to accept or reject the atonement.
