I have an 80g recordable Sony DVD player and can't tune it into my Virgin Media cable box. Have followed instructions but DVD player isn't picking up the stations.

You don't 'tune' it in. It has no tuner. You connect the two with a SCART lead and select AV1 (or whatever it's designated) on the Sony recorder to record from the Media box.
