My husband and I are taking a week vacation to Hawaii and staying with his uncle there. I'd like to get him something as a thank you. Any ideas?

Something to repay him a bit for the effort, time, expense he put into your stay. Restaurant or theater gift certificate, wine & cheese basket, something special from your home town.

I think a dinner out is a nice gift. Does he have any hobbies? (Like coin collecting?) You may be able to get a gift based on the hobbies. A little Internet searching would turn up some great gift ideas. You would need to do it at least a month before your trip so the gift arrives in time.

I'd love a gift certificate to a nice restaurant (make sure it's enough for a full dinner for two, including tax and tip!), but since he lives elsewhere, perhaps you can just get him a really nice bottle of wine when you come to stay. You can even just wrap it in a bow and leave it on his coffee table with a note saying how much you really appreciated it.

Something a little indulgent.

A gift certificate to play a round of golf.

Really good coffee.

Tickets to a show or concert he would really like to attend.

Get him something nice for his house like a crystal dish or casserole dish. You can also try to get some nice towels and soaps. Try Bed Bath and Beyond for ideas.

how bout a souvenir from where you live. You can probably find something at the tourist type gift shops in your town.

Call ahead and say you really appreciate him putting you up, and ask if there's anything you could bring from the "mainland."

Or while you're there you could cook him a nice meal as a thank you.
