Do a search for cars on http://www.craigslist.org

On the right side, select your state, then the closest major city to your location.

Then select the cars+trucks on the left side to look for vehicles.

And what if that car needs $2000 in repairs the day you buy it? And what if a $2500 car is in great shape and needs no repairs? Which is the better deal? I would buy from a one owner car who has had it serviced regularly at the dealer and will sell it to you because he can't get anything for it on the tradein for his new car. Get to know your dealer's used car lot salesman and ask him to tip you off to that situation. Dealer used car lots don't sell anything for under $6000, so they may match you up with a seller.
