Just like Jesus not knowing the day and hour of God's judgement, he also don't know who God his father will place on his right or left side...........just proves that God and Jesus are not the same person.

After 35 years of studying the scriptures, I only came into an understanding of this in the last couple of years.
It's such a deep theological matter, there's no way I can lay it out here. But I'll give you an avenue for study.
Ezekiel 1 and Rev 4 both have a description of the throne of God. Specifically, there are four "cherubs" being described in terms of four animals. The character of these four animals are carried into symbolism throughout the Bible.
There are only two cherubs flanking the mercy seat (the throne of God in the Holy of Holies of both the Jewish tabernacle and temple).
First, you need to discover why only two cherubs are on the ark of the covenant instead of four, and you will discover who sits at Christ's right hand and left and why.
The nature of the one who will sit upon that throne is key to uncovering the answer you seek.
Oh, and the imagery of the new Jerusalem comes into the equasion, specifically who are the gates, and who are the foundations. Now I may have given you too much. I do want this to be a discovery for you, otherwise, you don't deserve to know.

It was not his to give. That right was reserved by Jesus' Father, Jehovah. If Jesus were God, he could have decided who would go on his left or right. But he was not God. The decision had already been made for him.

great question! and yet another reason not to offend, dishonor or anger the One whom Yhshua/Jesus calls "the only true God" at John 17:3 by claiming that His first creation, His only-begotten Son is equal to Him.
Yhshua/Jesus is not equal to his Almighty Father YHWH/Jehovah
agape!

Actually, from what I gathered on that quote......Jesus is saying its God decision who sits where. Jesus is just like all of us.
That is what a non religious person such as myself thinks.

It was not His position of authority to grant such a request, it belonged to His Father alone.

don't get excited, the place was already picked by God, and Jesus knew who it was for, and He didn't want to hurt His apostle's feelings, but if you think about it, I think that you will come to know who He wanted close to Him. (Hint: He spent 9 months in her womb, and made of that place, a temporary heaven)
