Some people, usually very immature ones, need to feel important in life, so they start a rumor because they want others to think that they are "in the know." It is all about an individual's self-centeredness.

With collections of people who spend a lot of time around each other, eventually, "the group" figures out who these people are. Once their "stories" prove to be false, the group, by and large will generally ignore them.

So this works for the rumor mongers over the short-term but really backfires on them over the long-term. Unfortunately (for them) these geniuses never seem to figure that out.

I heard this rumor that abourbonman has been starting all the rumors on Yahoo Answers :).

Truth is those that start rumors usually do it because they think making someone else look bad will make them look better or they just want to hurt someone.

People who start rumors don't care about how other people feel.
It gives them a false sense of power, makes them feel powerful, because when others repeat their rumor then they know that people listen to what they say.
Those who pass on rumors or gossip are just as bad.
If you hate it when people start rumors, then make very sure that you do not help to spread them yourself.

Exactly you just answered your own question. People start rumors to basically hurt peoples feelings because they are insecure about themselves. It's all just to make themselves feel better.

I think that people do this because they lack social skills. They are ignorant of the proper way to form bonds and so they do this by repeating every word they ever hear from everyone they met because they mistakenly believe that it will bring them closer. But in fact, it alienates themselves and drives everyone away.
These people need attention, and I suggest giving them LOTS of attention until they get the message that it's not always good to have all your secrets in public.

Some people are drama queens/kings. They are so miserable with their own pathetic lives, they can't be content unless they are stirring up drama in other people's lives.
