I remember that 700-800 dog breeds exist. However many of them are NOT reconised by the American Kennel Club because they are very rare. Almost all countries have a local purebred dog native to it. Examples:
Austrailian Kelpie-Austrailia
Pyrenean Shepherd- France
Alaskan Husky- Alaska, USA
Note that all of the dogs listed are not fully reconised by the AKC at this time. The Austrailian Kelpie's reason is for preservation of working ability. A herding dog may lose it's natural herding instincts under AKC reconition and Kelpies are used on ranches all over the world to herd cattle, the breed's original purpose. The Pyrenean Shepherd is another herding dog; however it's reason is lack of numbers. The Pyre Shep was among the breeds that almost went extinct in World War Two. The Alaskan Husky is a mutt and breed both, plain and simple.

new breeds of dogs are being developed and added all the time - anyone for a puggle? however, there are a set number of breeds accepted by various institutions. for example, the american kennel club has decided what attributes are ideal for which breeds. go to their website to find their listing of dog breeds. they also review and recognize more breeds depending on which are becoming prevalent. there are numours other kennel clubs around the world, each with different standards and breeds.
