I have a large rottweiler/mastiff dog. I notice that after he goes on a run, his back legs seem to hurt him a little. Is there anything I can do to help him? or is there any type of vitamin that would help him out?

Sniffydogs' right! Go to your vet. There are so many things it could be. I have read that it is unwise to exercise mastiffs excessively. They are very prone to joint problems. If this is a young dog especially, because they are still developing. Another common problem is arthritis. Or maybe it is just a sprain? And, as with all big dogs, it could be hip dysplasia. I know you can give your dog baby asprin for pain. But go to the vet!

Most active, large breed dogs will experience this as they age. It's up to you to maintain it. Take him to the vet, have some x-rays done to make sure it's not a problem that needs to be addressed with surgery. Your vet can also prescribe some sort of pain medication for him. There are MANY types of meds made for dogs with pain. A popular one is Rimadyl. Some others are Metacam, Cosequin, Dermamaxx, Prednisone, etc. A lot of these also help with inflammation, which can be adding to your dogs pain after running. Your vet will be able to talk to you about what will work best for your dog.

After we adopted our mix we found out she had arthritis. Our vet put her on Rimadyl to ease her pain. Of course one other question is how much does your dog weigh, is it the right weight for the breed? Ours was 87 pounds, almost 20 too much. Once the weight was lost the pooch is acting much better. Also for a fast treatment you can you regular asprin. 200mg at the most. But remember NEVER give a dog Tyenlon. Good luck and if worse comes to worst, see your vet!

I myself have a mastiff mutt who has pretty severe hip pain. Definately see your vet, and get from them the proper amount of Glucosamine/condroitin (available over the counter) to give him. That will help, but if that's not enough, my dog also gets a pain reducer that is OK for dogs called ketoprofin. It rarely can be found over the counter or it can be bought from the pharmacy pretty cheaply.

Hello, am afraid it's time to not run him any more & take him to a vet..sounds like Hip Displaysia common in big dog breeds of any kind, it will only get worse, vets do have meds & there is surgery ( very expensive $1,000's ) if needed ... but it's best to seek a vet for either cuz this is a long term, chronic problem, very painful for the dog & owners..so best to seek a vet ..Take Care :)

Rimadyl from the vet if it is really bad. Also Glucosamine works to. My mom has a 14 year old lab that we thought was going to have to be put to sleep because he wasen't able to get up anymore due to really bad arthritis. The vet gives us a script for Rimadyl and we also give him 2 Glucosamine tablets a day and he is doing great! He even gets up and goes to the door and barks when someone knocks!

there is a supplement you can aid to his food. Gloucosimine
i know the spelling is incorrect but anyway you can find that at the local pet stores it helps with joint issues which the large bone dogs are normally more prone to have. Also make sure your vet checks him out to make sure there are no underlying problems with his bones/joints in his hips.

You may want to consult a vet. It may be arthritis in the hips or hip dysplasia which is sadly common in large breeds. Or he may have just hurt his muscles? Here is a hip dysplasia website.
Good Luck

I would consult your vet. Those large breed can often develop hip problems that your vet should know about. They can prescribe medicine similar to arthritis meds that can help with pain.
