Does waiting 12 or so hours to reply to an email look bad, or is the general rule as long as it's within 24 hours?

I think that it depends on what the email is about and who it's from.
If the email requires and immediate response then you should reply a.s.a.p.
If the email doesn't seem urgent or requires you do look something up or check on a detail or date or something like that, I would say reply within 24 hours.
I would say that the least you know a person, the sooner you should reply. And the more you know a person, the more time you can take. But it is never a good idea to make anybody wait too long-no matter how well you know them.
If you feel that you have waited too long, you can always apologize in your email for the lateness in replying.

These are jut my thoughts and what I tend to follow - hope it helps!

Friend or business??

If its a business reply, then you should respond as soon as you've got your facts together. The caveat here is that if the email came after you left work for the day or weekend, then the next business day is appropriate.

As for friends, your friends should understand that you've got more going on than just sitting around playing on the computer. So breeze through the message and if it doesn't require an IMMEDIATE reply, then you should be able to wait.

I suppose it depends on the email. If it is someone who is interested in hiring you for a job, the sooner you can reply the better, since you may be competing for this job with others.

If it is a email from a friend and it is a casual conversation about what is going on in their life, doing so when you have time is fine, even if it takes a little while to respond.

If they ask you a question that needs to be answered soon, however, then reply as soon as possible. If they are emailing you to tell you about their engagement, marriage or new baby, send them your congratulations as soon as possible.

Some people do not read their email everyday or check it once an hour.

I usually wait a week for a reply, unless I know the person reads their mail every day then, if its important, I'll email them again asking for an answer. If its not important I'll wait the week before emailing.

Is there a book on Internet Etiquette?

I once worked for a successful President and CEO. He told me that he could not go to bed at night and sleep until all his eMails got answered. Of course, he had Associates who aided in the process, but I was "taken back".

He was a very popular man; he even encouraged his employees to call him on his 1-800 number if they had concerns. I try to follow his example and return eMails in a timely fashion.

i think it depends on the email. if they email is important then reply fast. but if it not really that important you can wait. i think that waiting around 24 hours for regular emails is good.

I haven't heard of a specific time, unless you are in Customer Service and have to respond within 24 hrs.

I say respond whenever you feel like it.

I don't think it matters... I generally try to get to it within 24 hours or less, myself... But, when you have a chance is good. :)
