We pay a whole lot more if they stay.
Economics does NOT come out in favor of amnesty.
However, if we ever REALLY solved the problem (and NONE of the bills are really designed to do that) I'd be OK with legalizing those who are NOT twice illegal (and I mean a DUI here, not just 'three misdemeanors or a felony') and are NOT in gangs. However, then we couldn't have a going forward guest worker program because our schools are already failing our own children. Instead we would need to limit chain migration to only spouse (and only one per immigrant) and minor children of those here, to open up existing visas for workers WE really need.
We are nowhere near there, though. Homeland Security is still trying to get another extension for putting the visa exit tracking system in, Bush wants to cut through all of our new, expensive port security by letting in Mexican trucks from Chinese controlled ports with a 15 second per truck average passing the border, and they reneged on the fence they overwhelmingly voted in before the last election, in favor of provisions that will be gone the first time they fail to be re-funded in a budget.

You could probably come up with a compromise form of Amnesty that would grant some sort of visa for, I don't know, 5 or 7 years or something, to get them on record, then they could be removed when the visas run out.
Another option would be to offer amnesty, but have the entire process conducted entirely in Enlgish. If you can't communicate in English, you get directed to the deportation line. This would sepparate recent amnesty-jumpers who have poured across the border lately, from long-term residents who have started to aculturate.
Or - and maybe you could get some lib backing for immigration enforcement this way - you could re-call the troops from Iraq to round up the illegals, deport them, and guard the border.

Last time I checked, 77 hospitals have closed their doors in border states, welfare costs are skyrocketing, and we the taxpayers are paying for the extra police officers that are on tactical alerts across the country to keep the peace during these marches today. Who is costing us all of this?....
ILLEGALS!

"Any politicians with a plan not based on political rhetoric?"
Yeah, Bush's plan is a (somewhat) practical plan based on little to no political rhetoric - which is why it's going NOWHERE.

If we can spend a couple TRILLION $$$$$ over in Iraq, we can spare a few million to get rid of these law breakers.

What do you mean who pays? Have you read the reports on the amnesty? These illegals will be paying!!!
They will always be dumping a ton of money into OUR depleting Social Security....none of which they will be eligible for! Paying taxes, buying more things, etc.......
