I think the COOLEST small camera is the Canon Powershot SD700-IS. It has 4X optical zoom (35-140 mm), image stabilization and 6 MP. I bought one for my daughter's birthday and have been playing around with it for a couple of days until her birthday gets here. I was going to get this model for myself, but it was simply sold out everywhere for a couple of months when I was ready to buy. Maybe I should have waited...
It costs $300, has good zoom range and the image stabilization to go with it. It's SMALL and good looking. Great LCD and it still has an optical viewfinder.

(In Europe, this same camera is known as the IXUS 800 IS, so don't let the label on the camera confuse you. This is NOT the SD800-IS, which is known in Europe as the IXUS 850 IS.)
Many people will recommend the SD800-IS over the SD700-IS and I would disagree. The SD800-IS has a slightly wider angle lens, but the reviews say, "there is a slight, but noticeable drop off in sharpness towards the edges and corners in some circumstances." Also, the SD800-IS only zooms to an equivalent of 105 mm while the SD700-IS goes to 140 mm.

Hi, no one makes bad cameras anymore. You choose one that suits your needs and budget. That said ,their a few options that most everyone should get. First, if your shooting any pics outdoors, the camera needs a viewfinder, because in the bright light you can't see the screen on the back of the camera. Second, does it feel comfortable in your hand?....so that your fingers are not over the lens when shooting. Third, does it store the photos (digital files) on an "SD" card? This has become the most common and cheapest storage card on the market and the one that most laptops provide a slot for. Also ask yourself, does it need to be water and dust resistant?? Do I need a longer telephoto lens than 3x ( and that's "optical zoom" not "digital zoom; which is very low quality). Does it need to fit in my pocket or can it be a little bigger cause it'll be in my purse?? Also you will find the "video mode" very useful for making short clips to view on your computer and posting to the net for friends. Finally to answer one of your questions, 10 mega pixels and 5x optical zooms available by Nikon and Canon that I know of.

Check out the reviews of the Canon digital cameras at www.stevesdigicams.com
I don't think getting more than 7 megapixels out of a small digital camera should be a priority. - The sensor is so small in such cameras, that the picture quality is not necessary increased by packing in more than 7 megapixels.
Be sure to check out the Canon SD800is, which has a 3.8X zoom (with wide angle capability - 28mm to 105mm equivalent) - and image stabilization. - If you really want more mexapixels, check out the SD900, which has 10 megapixels, but no image stabilization.
Most Canon cameras have an eye level view finder in addition to the screen on the back. The trend with other camera makers is to leave that feature out. An eye level finder makes it easier to hold the camera steady - which can be particularly important when shooting movies.
Canon point and shoot cameras use SD memory cards which are among the most commonly available and cheapest kinds of memory cards - Olympus cameras use xD memory cards which tend to be more expensive.

Here's my favorite review site:

I've put in the first two cameras for comparison. You'll have to decide for yourself which features are best.
I also like the Fuji cameras like the F20 & F30, you might consider adding them to the list.
