OK, I can't do the whole thing, but here's some ideas to include:

Something knocks an iron onto it's face.
The iron burns a hole in a shirt.
The smoke sets off the smoke alarm.
The smoke alarm wakes some sort of animal.

Fan switch turns on.
Fan blows a toy sailboat across a water filled basin.

Just a few things to include. You can also try the Rube Goldberg site for more ideas.

Buy a small 5 volt coil relay from RadioShack and take it apart to extract only the coil part.

Connect it to a 6V lantern battery or 4 D-cells (buy a 4 D-cell battery holder from RadioShack, also).

Also... buy a pushbutton switch, called a momentary contact switch that is "normally closed" (push to open).

Connect the battery, switch, and relay coil in series. This will form a strong enough electromagnet to hold a metal pin.

Arrange some rolling ball, or swinging weight to push the button to disconnect the battery from the relay, thus dropping the pin.

This method is better than trying to wind your own electromagnet.
