Oi... it called an erection... It's not a bad word and is much more polite to say than using crass nicknames. Now onto your question.
Guys get erections when they start producing a chemical in their brain, can't think of what it's called right now, which is released whenever they think of subjects such as girl genetilia, sex, them getting pleased by means other than typical vaginal sex, when they are in the company of a "hot" girl, and other things like that . At this point, the chemicals are released and the brain sends hormones throughout the body causing an excess amount of blood to rush to their penis whic causes the tissues in it to because more rigid.
There are also times when there isn't a reason but the brain makes sure everything is working right. This typically happens when they are asleep.

When the guy is relaxed enough to have an erection. Obviously, his perceptions must be stimulated by some kind of stimulius (girls, girls, girls...). The important thing is that the guy is relaxed. Anxiety tends to oppose it that's why people undergoing lots of stress (playing sports, exams, depression etc.) have a hard time having an erection. Sometimes when the temperature is cold also. Maybe because blood vessels constrict and the blood is more able to concentrate to that part.
