During that time of disunity, the Assyrians attacked from the north, going to one tribe at a time ... much easier to defeat them when the other tribes weren't willing to come and help.
The 10 tribes in the north were destroyed or run out of Israel, and are the lost tribes.
The 2 remaining tribes - Benjamin and Judah - were attacked and taken away by the Babylonians. Solomon's temple was destroyed, and they went through severe suffering untill they returned and rebuilt the temple finishing about 400 BC
