The national speed limit is 30 mph unless otherwise stated.
At the moment it is 60 mph single carriage ways, 70 mph dual and motor ways.

RE:
What is the speed limit on a dual carriageway in Britain?
I always thought it was 70mph but have been told by a friend that is only 70mph on a motorway and 60mph on other roads unless stated

You're right. The speed limit on a dual carriageway (and motorway) is 70mph, unless otherwise restricted.
This could be by virtue of posted or temporary limits or by virtue of what you're driving. Street lights closer than 200 metres apart automatically create a 30mph limit unless signs state otherwise.
If you're interested the details are in the Highway Code.

On my way home through the suburbs of Sheffield, I have noticed that on a two lane dual carriageway the speed signs are as follows:
30mph, 40 mph and 50mph.
This has also been noted on various other dual carriageways around the UK.
The answers so far are mentioning 70 and 60 mph respectively.
70mph is allowable on 'M' class roads or motorways.
60mph is the national speed limit for non motorways in the UK. You would usually find this speed limit on 'A' class roads in rural or non built up areas.
Hope this helps.
