Wasn't he content repeating the crap he pulled in the old testament? Gaining believers in israel, then losing them, then allowing them to be enslaved, then losing them, rinse, repeat. Why did he have to change from a murdering rampaging violent god that destroys entire cities into a loving god that worked as a carpenter, and made wine? Why the dramatic change in attitude? Is it the same person? Usually when someone has a dramatic change in behavior it is a sign that they are very unstable.

Q&A thanks, but that doesn't answer why god needed jesus, why did he change his plans?
Why was he murdering one day and forgiving the next?

Interesting point bob202, sorry if I'm spelling this wrong I can't see the name in front of me as I write this, but there is such a dramatic shift between the testaments that it is impossible to get over.

If my doctor gave me something but didn't explain it in terms I could understand I would not take it. Not that I want to die, but because if the doctor cannot explain it, he must not know what he is doing. Just like god cannot explain his sudden lapse in vengeful actions, and even though jesus got mad, he didn't kill anyone.

Guess what. He's coming again. As a victorious King to straighten out those who mock Him.

First thing; God does not change. The same God in the old testament is also God in the new testament. He loves and hates (Read Proverbs 6 to see what the Lord hates also Ecc 3, Amos 5, Zec 8) the same in both eras. The seeming change in the new testament is the new understanding of God's love as shown through Christ's sacrificial life. In the old testament the law was written to make sin clear to all mankind and the harshness of the law was meant to cause a yearning for a future without the harshness of law. Then Jesus came to fulfill that law and show a better way (the only way that was possible) for humankind to be allowed into a perfect heaven with a perfect and holy God.
Do you remember that Jesus was the one who took a whip and overturned tables in the temple? What happened to the loving, kind Jesus then? I say to you that this was a loving, kind thing. He made clear that setting up shop and calling it church was not a good thing. God still hates sin, this has not changed. God still loves with an unequivocal love, this has not changed.
Love is not always sticky, gooey, sweet love. Sometimes love is honest to the point of offending someone for their own good. The Bible does this often when it states that mankind is evil from conception and continues to be bad all his days on this earth. But that does not mean we are told this out of hate and further I believe we are told this out of love in hopes that we will see reality and turn to the One who came to die for us.

Well for starters the premise of your question is all wrong, with all due respect. Jesus was not on earth during the time of the Old Testament. The OT was full of prophecies that lead to his identification as the Messiah and the history of that is recorded in the Gospels/the New Testament.
The reason for what you call the murdering rampage that God (Jesus' FATHER) went on was to cleans the land of a murderous wicked people that included child sacrifices as part of their worship. I do not have citations right now, but archaelogists have discovered burial jars with the bones of thousands of children in the lands in question. Their reaction was to say that the real question is why it took God so long to get rid of them.
==================
God never changed his mind. From the very beginning... from the moment Adam & Eve sinned and God gave them their punishment, he announced that he would send a seed that would, to put it briefly, redeem mankind. (Genesis 3:15). That see was Jesus Christ. Throughout all of the Old Testament, everything that happened was to prepare the way for him. In fact, you're familiar with the Ten Commandments. Those are part of the Mosaic Law given to the Israelites centuries before Jesus' arrival on the scene. That Law, the Apostle said, was a tutor leading to Christ.
and by the way. One of God's four Cardinal Qualities is Justice. Justice sometimes demands harsh punishment.for heinous crimes. That as i said was what the nations destroyed by God were guilty of. Did I mention they sacrificed children to the God Molech by making them pass through fire?

Well i will not brush your very legitimate question off, clearly it is directed toward Christians and for most of us, (yeah i' am one) those who are honest and willing to examine their own beliefs, ask it themselves.
The shift from this old testament wrathful God to the nearly hippie like Jesus is massive, however both of those are huge generalizations. God in the Old testament does many loving things... As a just and Holy God he has every right to destroy any unholiness in any nation yet he continues to give them chances over and over and as humans they eventually screw up so he must punish them. Your absolutely right it seems he has this pattern where he is just more violent however the pattern shows LOVE not more than anything else.
And Jesus, no he didn't go around destroying nations however he did physically throw people out of the temple twice. Constantly he went head to head with the religious rulers and asked question that they could not answer. So now i will ask.
Why ask a question that is deliberately hard and wait for the un-expecting, well meaning, but not so knowledgeable person walk into a sh## storm of your own minds battle, you are doing one of two things truly questioning or just trying to screw with someone who has yet to be able to think for themselves??
The best answer is simply this He doesn't Change you just see a diferent side of his character.
A little more:
Thanks for responding, it does appear that you are truly trying to get answers to tough questions, questions that sunday schools, churches, and Christians in general try to ignore because they are hard. Hard for some christians means run and Just say I have faith... Christianity does make sense... in fact it makes more sense then most want you to know.
The Shift is huge, and it should never be looked over or ignored. When you go back and read the OLD testament look for the LOVE, God constanlty relents punishment for Israel, Protects them... allways LOVE... and sometimes love hurts, and its hard... He shows forgiveness many times... It is full of LOVE... read Psalms those are praises many times of His love in punishment and hard times... Read some of those it will help.

In humans a dramatic change indicates instability, but in a fictional story a change in character is generally used to appeal to a broader audience.
there were probably some people who said "Wow, your religion sounds nice... but your god sounds so cruel!" so they say "Hey boys... let's make this god fella sound nicer & introduce a new character. We'll call him Guiseppe! No? what's wrong with that name? Jesus?? no way, that's a stupid name! Oh alright... we'll go with jesus... and he'll turn fish into man-eating monsters!! What? Water to wine? Oooh I like that better yeah!!!"
