Wahabism, though Wahabis generally do not refer to themselves as such, and prefer the term "Salafism". Whabism or Salafism is an Islamic movement started in the 18th century by the scholar Abdul Wahhab. This theology is the dominant form found in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, as well as some pockets of Somalia, Algeria and Mauritania. It is considered to be the most ultra-comservative form of Islam. The fundamental texts are the Quran and the Hadith, and Wahabism is generally identified by its opposition to music, art, the acceptance of non-literal explanations of God's attributes, and various forms of what it considers to be polytheism (praying at graves, celebrating the birth of Muhammed, etc.). Wahabism was not so popular as a doctrine throughout the Islamic world until the 20th century, when oil revenue allowed the Saudis to export with influence their Salafist doctrine to surrounding Arab countries. Saudi laypeople, government officials and clerics have donated many tens of millions of US dollars to create religious schools, newspapers and outreach organizations all over the world that spread the fundamentalist philosophy of Wahabism.
