tree-hug·ger (trē'hŭg'ər)
n. Informal.

An environmentalist, especially one who supports the preservation of forested land and the restriction of logging.

Plus, it is simply not true that tree huggers care more about saving trees than the needs and well being of humans. It's more like they care more about saving trees than providing for the laziness and inefficiency of humans. There are plenty of replacements for the things created by the cutting down of trees. Ever heard of a corn stove? Recycled paper?

tree hugger refers to those who wish to stop the foresting tendencies of loggers. It is a stereotypical term that canrefer to vegetarians, hippies, and generally environmentalist type people. It is rather derogetory, ad is a bit of an insult, but it is also, in part, a compliment to those who see themsleves as the saviors of the tree population.

Its a term, usually used by ultra-conservative talk-show hosts, to deride environmentalists.

A person wearing it on a pin or t-shirt, however, is probably an environmentalist reaffirming their support for the environmentalist movement in a humorous, ironic sort of way.

It started out as a derogatory term for environmental activists who chained themselves to trees to stop them from being cut down, also associated with hippy types who commune with trees. It's now been adopted by the same people it was used to insult as a statement of pride.
