Yes, you can have a guaranteed duty station. You must stipulate that before you sign. Make sure you see it in your contract. Do not allow them to lie to you, if it isn't in writing than I wouldn't sign it. They might try to say it is unavailable, but then counter that with I guess I am unavailable. And they will make it happen you may piss them off, but oh well. Recruiters are the worst for this, but they are just trying to get you in without spending any of their slots.

In my day, you could negotiate with your recruiter and MEPS to get station of choice. This would go into your contract. According to the Army "Virtual Recrutier" on thier web page,
"In some cases, Soldiers are offered a guaranteed location as an enlistment option based on MOS vacancies"
As far as Alaska goes, there are two major Army posts, Fort Wainwright and Fort Richardson. Both of these posts have organizations that have deployed and will deploy in the future, so just because you're stationed where it's cold, it does not mean you're not going to spend a significant amount of time where it is hot.
As a young person, it's difficult to stand up for yourself with MEPS and the recruiters. If you want Alaska, tell them that's what you want and don't take no for an answer. At some point, one of you will blink...

If you want to go to Alaska forget the army and join the Coast Guard. It's almost like the real military, you'll probably never see a real war, and there are more coasties in Alaska than anywhere else. Beyond rescuing wayward boaters they do important work protecting the Alaskan oil shipping lanes and ports from drunks and terrorists. They also play a big role in preventing smuggling and piracy. Fight pirates, join the Coast Guard!

If the job that you are choosing has an opening in Alaska, then you can get it, in writing.
What's more important to you? The job, or the location? I understand that you might like both, but sometimes we all have to give and take. If the location is more important, then when your at MEPS, tell the counselor that you want to go to Alaska. He will show you what jobs are up there, and which ones you qualify for.
Good luck

Join the Guard, Army or Air. If you are in the Alaska Guard, they send you back to Alaska, until you deploy. You also get a guaranteed job.

Very few people are sent to Alaska. There are actually 2 army bases in Alaska: Wainwright and Richardson. It all depends on your MOS...for example, my husbands MOS is 13M, because of this, he will never be able to go anywhere besides Ft Sill, just because this is the place that specializes in his MOS. You could google the different bases in Alaska to see which MOS is available in each. Also, be sure to speak with your recruiter.

YES! My husband and i sadly...found out that you can pick your first duty station before you go to sign...when it was too late :( He just found out a few weeks ago and hes almost done with AIT. You need to make sure you ask your recruiter specifically and tell him/her that you KNOW you can do it becuase YOU CAN!!! His recruiter told us after we found out and my husband called very upset, that all he would have had to do was ask him.
Good luck and thank you for joining!!! I hear that alaska is really nice...we might be getting stationed there as well!!!

You can always ask. So many of the most serious threats to our freedom and scurity come form the arctic circle... I'll be shocked if you Don't get stationed exactly where you want.
The army is really changing into more of a discount travel agency rather than a trained fighting force.
Why do you want to join, if you want to join only on such specific terms??

It is possible to sign for a station of choice, depending on the job you are looking for. Remember, after AIT, you are guaranteed to stay there for only a year, then you are at the mercy of the needs of the service.
Good Luck!

Probably not. You have to finish whatever school you are going to and then you may have an opportunity to earn the choice of where to go. Needs of the Army come first, so don't get your hopes up yet. Work hard and be number one in your Army school and you may get to make this choice down the road. Good luck.
