His friend Lazarus had died, but I don't think that is why He wept. Why would He weep over the death of Lazarus when He knew He could raise Lazarus from the dead? His other friends were there, weeping and morning the death of Lazarus. Many will say He wept for them, because they were sad at the death of their loved one. It is my thought that perhaps he wept due to the lake of faith His friends had in Him. They should have, by this time, known that Jesus was the Massiah and would be able to help Lazarus, but their faith was not that strong yet. Perhaps that is why Jesus wept.

God bless,
Stanbo

He weep for the World. As you can see, Jesus is a very emotional man. So he wept, thinking of how he should change the world for the better.

So he moved on with the crucification and do his best to pull away human's despair along with him, even though by means of sacrificing himself. Then he wept again.

So you see, he is a very emotional man. =)

He wept when he saw how upset people were over Lazarus' death, even though he had purposely stayed away 3 more days when he heard his friend was ill (he already knew what he was going to do, raising him from the dead). He wept "with" Mary and Martha and their friends, showing compassion for their pain, and also I believe he wept for their lack of understanding of their own eternal life. That's why he asks Martha and Mary if they believe in the resurrection etc.

In John , chapter 11 verse 35..it does say" Jesus wept".. but you have to read the whole chapter to get the just of it. Jesus was a friend of Lazarus. Mary and Martha were Lazarus' sisters. Mary was with Jesus when He was crustified. Needless to say, Mary and her famiy meant a great deal to Jesus. Jesus and His disciples were not in town when Lazarus died. But once Jesus got news of it, He felt in His spirit that He needed to go back.
So once He and His disciples returned to Bethany, where Mary and her family were, and where Lazarus had dies. Martha was the first to approach Him and said, " if you had been here, my brother wudl not have dies. But i know taht even now, God will give you whatever you ask." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." When Mary finally reached the pace where He wa and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Jesus saw her weeping and was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Jesus asked Mary' Where have you laid him?" They took Jesus to where Lazarus was buried and that is When Jesus wept..He cried because He saw His friend, dead and He was also moved by the grief that had stricken Mary and her sister Martha.

When Jesus wept He wasnt weeping for Lazarus. He was weeping for those who were weeping, because He saw their sorrow and grief. Jesus knew He would raise up Lazarus. He also wept and lamented for Jerusalem. I went to a funeral yesterday and did not weep for the one demised for I knew she was in heaven, but I wept for those who mourned and sorrowed because they were missing their loved one.

I wanna say Martha, but I have to reread

Edit: Well his friends Mary and Martha told him to help Lazarus, who was dying. Jesus kept saying "I'll get there" and when he showed up Laz had been dead for 4 days. Jesus wept when he saw the tomb and the crowd gathered there. He was "deeply moved in spirit" when he saw the crowd at the tomb in 11:33 - so it looks like the crowd made him cry. The emotion he was expressing? Looks like sorrow (for how sad the crowd was) or maybe "Dude has been dead for 4 days, they're expecting something big and look how huge the crowd is!"

Mate, hanging on a cross I would certainly weep too. And I don’t think that spear was helping the situation. Actually, according to alternative accounts the cruci-fiction never happened. It was some other guy on the cross and Jesus was laughing at the scene from a distance (now that’s a cool Jesus).

Most of the answers above are real good and they do state what most Christians believe.

*On the other Hand*

I think that He might have been crying, because He knew He would be raising Lazarus from his place of rest and bringing him back to this world of such sin, to live out how ever many years of life was given to him in this world.

He was crying cause Lazarus would be back in this sinful world.
