1/3 cup white sugar
1-1/2 tsp. butter
1 tsp.vanilla
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
2 cups white flour
2 tsp.baking powder
1/8 tsp.cinnamon
1/8 tsp.nutmeg
1/2 tsp.salt

Mix sugar, butter, vanilla, milk and egg together. In seperate bowl mix together all dry ingredients. Combine dry mixture and butter mixture. Roll 1/2" thick and cut out with doughnut cutter.(We don't have a doughnut cutter, so dd just made small dough ropes and joined the ends together to make doughnut shape.) Heat shortening,in a frying pan, until melted; reduce heat to medium. Test shortening with a little piece of dough;if bubbles appear when the dough is added, you're ready to fry the doughnuts. Add doughnuts to melted shortening, and fry until golden brown on both sides. When done, set on paper towels to drain, then roll in sugar. Let cool for a bit, then ENJOY!

I watched a show on food network where someone made donuts using pizza dough. They took the dough and used cookie cutters to shape the dough then friend the dough in oil in a frying pan on the stove until they were golden brown. Then they dipped them in whatever topping they wanted. I tried the recipe and they werereally good I ate most of the donuts by myself. Hope this helps.

Are you trying to reduce calories or go more natural? I am trying to get away from using shortening also (because I want to eat more natural foods). I was thinking of trying organic coconut oil (the flavor is supposed to be neutral, and it is more natural, and healthier). Butter or lard would also work.

Also, try baking instead of frying. King Arthur baking company offers a donut baking pan.

Just use a little butter in place of the shortening and have plenty of vegetable oil for frying.

ok either go to the store and buy them or take a can of biscuts, cut the middle out of them and fry them or i guess you could bake them then you can like put them in a covered bowl with a little bit of powered sugar, cinnamon and sugar, etc. for flavoring, shake it up and eat them.

Used the tubed bisquits, like pillsbury, stretch them a bit and put a hole in them. They turn out very light and airy and you can frost them or powdered sugar, glaze. Whatever you like.
