In the bible, there are many instructions from various people telling us to "fear" God and I came across a passage in 1 John:16-18 about "no fear in love" and "perfect love drives out fear". Can someone expect to me what "fear" in the context of "Fear God" and also why did 1 John mention something different?

Deut 6:13 You shall FEAR the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall WORSHIP the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve’”.

In Luke 4:8 Jesus quoted from Deut 6:13 and interpreted the word "fear" as "worship" Therefore based on Jesus' interpretation the fear of God is the worship of God. The "fear" in 1 John is not "worship".

The bible is filled with many things telling of the opposite of truth so as to wake up the reader to what the real truth is. The opposite of fear is understanding, and this (believe it or not) is not telling the human race to fear God because God has a multiple personality disorder or something and so we can't ever trust Him. It means to get understanding. Perfect love casts out fear, because God is Love, and there is no fear in God or His spiritual creation. God fills all space and He can't be aware of something that is not, such as fear, or a reality (mortal) that seems to displace Him.

I don't believe we should literal be afraid of God that's kind of silly. I think that we should fear the repercussion of not following Gods word. But then if you think about it what is God saying really..."Follow me, Love me, do what i say or else!" I still love the big guy though. Being a father myself i understand that sometimes you have to be a little stern with your children for their own Good. This is the same thing. Sometimes a little fear is a good thing it may keep you from doing something really stupid.

All of the above are dribble. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. Whatever we fear, we worship. It's real, it's a fact. But, it is only the beginning of a journey towards a very large God. The end of that journey will be in perfect, fearless love. For now, obey him, get to know him, learn to love in in the narrowly defined manner of man.

I think God would rather you fear him, that ignore him.

Fear of the Lord, is a Gift Of the Holy Spirit.

Basically, it makes the person humble of heart, knowing how Infinate the Greatness Of God Is.

Fear can also mean an awesome, reverential, respect for the greatness of God and who He is. To understand that man cannot stand in front of God who is a Spirit and a consuming fire. I think of God as an electrical storm which is greater than any electrical storm that I have ever seen light up the sky.
Then I see Jesus as God and I see the love that Jesus showed for me. I see the humble Jesus that washed His disciples feet and cooked His disciples a meal after He told them where to catch the fish. What a great Lord and Savior and God. Then I know the Holy Spirit inside of me who is closer than any friend or family. He guides me. He comforts me. He keeps me in total peace.

The word fear in the Hebrew and Greek also means "reverence". Only God's enemies should fear Him.

In the Christian world fear is confused with love.

Great question! Most people think that to fear God means to be afraid of Him. But that is not the reference. To fear God simply means to "RESPECT" Him.

If you fear God you do what He commands you to do even though it goes totally against the world and even your own logic. That is fearing the Lord. Take care and may God bless you spiritually.
